Level 2 Media Unit 1C: Narrative and Genre Key Terms
Non Linear Narratives

·         Chronology- Events that are organised in order.

·         Concurrent / parallel narratives- done at the same time

·         Flashback / Flash-forward- Flashback: when a scene is taken back to an earlier time
·         Flash-forward: a scene that is take forward in time.

·         Time and space- the location that the narrative is taking place at. 

·         Serial format- In literature, a serial is a printed format by which a single larger work, often a work of narrative fiction, is published in sequential installments.

·         Cliff-hangers- a dramatic end that makes the audience wonder what will happen next.

·         Editing and non-linear narratives: continuity v discontinuity- intervals. gaps, not continued. 

Narration

·         Use of a narrator as a piece to camera, voice over, caption- title or a brief explanation in text.

·         Subjective / objective- almost biased, pick things out


  Mode of address / tone- how the storyline is delivered 

Genre and its function

·         Types
horror
romance
thriller
sci-fi
factual
·         Sub –genres- division between genres
·         Role for the audience- to consume the media

·         Role for the producer- to produce the media

Textual analysis of Power Power is a show that is known for its violent antics and the episode that I am going to be analysing has no exception. From what it seems to be a happily married couple, James and Tasha live an entirely different lifestyle from the usual person’s point of view. Advert: John Lewis - Monty the Penguin https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLSUDUth3Sk Introduction format: It’s a series of adverts that come out each year for a Christmas campaign by John Lewis. It is accessible on YouTube and is broadcasted on television which makes it easy to share with friends.   Purpose: As there is a new advert each year for Christmas, its purpose is to bring people together as it has quite a meaningful message of love. This helps family's to get together for the holidays and attract an audience to go shop at the place which the ad is from, in this case, John Lewis. Platform for broadcast: The platform for broadcast is Television which made it highly popular in the UK during the holidays as is would come on quite often.
